Conditions Too Dry for Winter Wheat in the Plains

Spotty rain and snow showers may have hampered end-of-season fieldwork in the Ohio Valley and lower Great Lakes region, but they were too brief in the Tennessee Valley and western and central Gulf Coast states to slow late-autumn winter wheat planting.
Meanwhile, dryness and late-season warmth in the Plains led to increased stress on a portion of the wheat crop for the week ending Nov. 27, according to today's Weekly Weather and Crop Bulletin from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Soil moisture shortages were particularly acute in parts of Montana and on the central and southern High Plains.
Mild, dry conditions also prevailed in the western United States, excluding the Pacific Northwest and the northernmost Rockies.
Elsewhere, snow blanketed parts of northern New England, with nearly 6 inches falling Nov. 26 Caribou, ME.
