Grassley to Head Finance Instead of Judiciary Committee
USAgNet - 11/19/2018
Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley used the power of seniority to claim chairmanship of the tax-writing Finance Committee on Friday, saying he would pursue a pro-growth agenda of "additional tax relief and tax fairness" and making health care more affordable.
Grassley would become Finance chairman officially in January when Senate Republicans make committee assignments. He is assured of the new chairmanship, however, because, in his seventh term, he is the longest-serving GOP senator. In becoming Finance
chairman, he will surrender the chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee, where he oversaw confirmation of two Supreme Court justices. Senate Republicans confirmed Grassley this week for the post of president pro tempore in the new session, putting him
third in the line of succession to the presidency.
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig issued the following statement regarding the announcement:
"I look forward to continuing to work with Sen. Grassley as he will again chair the Senate Finance Committee. Sen. Grassley is a tireless advocate for Iowa farmers and having him in this important role will help make sure Iowa's interests are protected as
negotiations move forward with a number of our key trade partners. We have seen real progress on trade negotiations in recent weeks and talks with China and the EU are scheduled during the G20 later this month. I will continue to work with the
Administration to urge swift resolution to these trade negotiations."
