R-CALF Mourns Passing of Cattle Industry Champion
USAgNet - 12/09/2019

R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard issued the following statement regarding the passing of long-time R-CALF USA member and cattle industry leader Kimmi Lewis. She died Dec. 6 at age 62 following her third battle with cancer.

"Our U.S. cattle industry suffered a great loss today upon the passing of a true cattle industry champion, Kimmi Lewis, from Kim, Colorado.

"Kimmi served as R-CALF USA's Private Property Rights Committee Chair for several years and demonstrated to the entire industry how to succeed on challenging issues by maintaining steadfast resolve, irreproachable integrity and dignity, and professionalism.

"She was the consummate champion for bringing back country-of-origin labeling for independent cattle producers and consumers alike, having introduced country-of-origin placarding bills in the Colorado Assembly in which she served as a Colorado legislator.

"Kimmi will be sorely missed not only as a true champion for independent cattle producers, but as a dear friend and colleague to the thousands of R-CALF USA members across the United States.

"We pray for Kimmi and her loving family and we know with absolute certainty that she has earned her everlasting home in heaven."

She owned and ran the Muddy Valley Ranch near Kim, Colo., in eastern Las Animas County. Her husband died in 2000, leaving her to operate the ranch and finish raising their six children, all of whom have since earned college degrees.

Lewis was also a politician who served as a state representative. A Republican, Lewis represented Colorado House of Representatives District 64, a massive district which encompasses nine counties on Colorado's Eastern Plains, including Baca, Bent, Crowley, Elbert, Kiowa, Las Animas, Lincoln, Prowers, and Washington. She was first elected in 2016.

Memorial services for Lewis have not yet been publicly announced.
