S.D. Corn Yield Forecast at Record High

Based on September 1 conditions, South Dakota's 2018 corn crop is forecast at a record high 839 million bushels, up 14 percent from last year's production, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Acreage harvested for grain is estimated at 4.85 million acres, down 5 percent from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at a record high 173 bushels per acre, up 28 bushels from last year.

Soybean production is forecast at record high 277 million bushels, up 15.0 percent from last year. Acres for harvest, at 5.66 million acres, is up 1 percent from 2017. Yield is forecast at 49 bushels per acre, up 6 bushels from last year.

Sorghum production is forecast at 17.2 million bushels, up 49 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 215,000 acres, is 26 percent above 2017. Yield is forecast at 80 bushels per acre, up 12 bushels from last year.

Dry edible pea production is forecast at 480,000 hundredweight, down 9 percent from last year. Acres harvested, at 20,000 acres, is down 43 percent from 2017. Yield is forecast at 2,400 pounds per acre, up 900 pounds from last year.
