Calf Value Discovery Program Registration Due Oct. 15
South Dakota Ag Connection - 10/12/2018

South Dakota cattle producers can sign up for the SDSU Extension Calf Value Discovery Program today to receive post-weaning performance data to help them improve management decisions that impact the financial bottom-line.

The registration deadline is Oct. 15.

"Post-weaning performance data influences the price received when calves are marketed at or near weaning. And, obtaining post-weaning animal and carcass performance data provides producers with additional information to make better financial and management decisions for their operations," explained Julie Walker, Professor & SDSU Extension Beef Specialist.

The SDSU Extension Calf Value Discovery program is designed to allow producers to consign a minimum of five steer calves (500 to 800 pounds).

Cattle will be fed in an accelerated finishing program at two locations - the Southeast Research Farm, Beresford and Vander Wal Yards, Bruce.

SDSU personnel will weigh cattle periodically and cattle owners will be sent performance updates.

Cattle will be sold in truckload lots beginning around May 15, 2019. All cattle will be sold on a grid price system.

For specific details or to register for the program, visit the SDSU website. The cost to participate in this program is $20 per head.

Producers are encouraged to indicate your preference for location (Vander Wal or Southeast Farm) however, organizers reserve the option to determine final yard assignment depending on enrollment numbers and capacity at each location.

2018 delivery dates for Vander Wal Yards, Bruce are Nov. 7 and 8. Delivery dates for Southeast Research Farm, Beresford are Nov. 13 and 14.

To assist western South Dakota cow/calf producers, calves can be delivered to the SDSU Cottonwood Range and Livestock Field Station on Nov. 6.
