SDSU Extension Programs Receive National Recognition

SDSU Extension programs were recognized at various national Extension association meetings throughout 2019. SDSU Extension professionals network with peers across the country by attending their respective association conferences and representing the outreach work that is being done in South Dakota.

"It is extremely gratifying to see the exceptional work of SDSU Extension professionals being recognized at the regional and national levels," said SDSU Extension Director Karla Trautman. "This recognition is a testament to the quality programming and outreach work that is being conducted by SDSU Extension across the state of South Dakota."

- National Extension Association for Family and Consumer Sciences (NEAFCS) 2019 Annual Session

SDSU Extension Family and Community Health Field Specialist Kimberly Cripps and SDSU Extension Nutrition Field Specialist Megan Erickson were both members of the team that received the 2nd Place National NEAFCS Excellence in Multi-State Collaboration Award and 2nd Place Central Region NEAFCS Excellence in Multi-State Collaboration Award. The NEAFCS Excellence in Multi-State Collaboration Award recognizes outstanding Extension programs conducted by Extension educators and agents in two or more states. Sponsored by the NEAFCS Awards Fund, the award promotes and recognizes outstanding Extension programs conducted by a multi-disciplinary team demonstrating effective performance and significant results. Cripps and Erickson were both recognized for their commitment to meeting the needs of individuals, families and communities and for their roles as part of a multi-state collaboration to increase nutrition-focused resources.

- National Association of County Agricultural Agents (NACAA) 2019 Annual Meeting and Professional Improvement Conference

SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Specialist Adele Harty was a recipient of the NACAA Distinguished Service Award recognizing her 14-year career in SDSU Extension working with cow/calf producers across South Dakota, and her development of a multi-state cattle mineral nutrition program. Harty was one of several honorees selected by her peers and the Director of Extension who represent the top two percent of the NACAA membership.

SDSU Extension Pesticide Education and Urban Entomology Field Specialist Amanda Bachmann was a recipient of the NACAA Achievement Award for her efforts in providing pesticide safety education and training for commercial and private applicators in South Dakota. Bachmann currently serves the South Dakota Association of Agriculture Extension Professionals alongside Harty who serves as Vice President. Bachmann was one of several honorees selected by her peers and the Director of Extension who represent the top one percent of the NACAA membership.

beefSD, an intensive two-year educational program designed to introduce beginning beef producers to the complexity of the beef industry, was recognized with the National Search for Excellence Award. SDSU Extension beefSD team members include SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialists Robin Salverson and Adele Harty, SDSU Extension Meat Science Specialist Amanda Blair, SDSU Extension Beef Specialist Ken Olson and SDSU Extension Associate Stacy Hadrick.

Additionally, SDSU Extension Plant Pathology Field Specialist Connie Strunk was elected to serve as the NACAA National Secretary.

- National Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals 2019 Conference

SDSU Extension 4-H Youth Program Advisors Lauren Hollenbeck, Audra Scheel and Jodi Loehrer were recognized for their years of service to Extension 4-H Youth Development Programs.

Hollenbeck, who serves Union, Clay and Yankton counties, received the Achievement in Service Award for serving programs for more than three and less than seven years. Scheel was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for her service of more than seven years to Sanborn, Aurora and Jerauld/Buffalo Counties. Loehrer, who serves programs in Codington County, received the Meritorious Service Award for over 15 years of service.
