South Dakota youth can win up to $200 in cash prizes when they compete in the South Dakota 4-H Quotes to Live by Contest. Deadline for contest entries is March 1.

"The Quotes to Live By Essay Contest is a fun, easy and effective way to enhance your school's or 4-H club's character efforts," said Karelyn Farrand, SDSU Extension Regional 4-H Youth Program Advisor. "It inspires youth to reflect upon, express and commit to living by wise and enduring truths that will guide them to make ethical choices throughout their lives."

The contest is open to all South Dakota schools, home schools and individual 4-H members fourth, seventh and ninth grade writers. Contest Coordinators will find maxims and activities in the Quotes to Live By Educational Resources on iGrow.

The contest is open to all South Dakota Schools, Home Schools and Individual 4-H members.

Cash prize awards are awarded to the top five places in each grade level. First place receives $200; second place receives $150; third place receives $100; fourth place receives $75 and fifth place receives $50. Teachers of first place winners will receive $100 to put toward character education resources.

"The students grew as individuals when they reflected on their own life and shared that experience with others," said Kama Konda-Varilek, ninth-grade teacher at Tri-Valley High School. "My relationship with my students grew stronger too because I learned about their views on life... I opened up too and shared moments in my life when these maxims impacted me."
