Winter Makes Brief Appearance in South Dakota

For the week ending Sunday, winter made a brief return to portions of South Dakota early in the week, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain prompted winter weather advisories in central and eastern counties on Monday. Small grain planting progressed during the week as precipitation amounts were relatively light for most locations and temperatures warmed considerably towards week's end. There were 4.5 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 3 percent very short, 13 short, 81 adequate, and 3 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 2 percent very short, 18 short, 79 adequate, and 1 surplus.

Winter wheat condition rated 0 percent very poor, 6 poor, 41 fair, 52 good, and 1 excellent.

Spring wheat planted was 52 percent, near 56 last year, but ahead of 44 for the five-year average. Emerged was 11 percent, near 12 both last year and average.

Oats planted was 48 percent, near 52 last year and 46 average. Emerged was 10 percent, near 12 last year and 13 average.

Barley planted was 19 percent, near 21 last year and 23 average. Emerged was 1 percent.

Cattle and calf conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 14 fair, 77 good, and 8 excellent. Calving progress was 65 percent, near 64 last year and 63 average. Cattle and calf death loss rated 1 percent heavy, 73 average, and 26 light.

Sheep and lamb conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 20 fair, 74 good, and 3 excellent. Lambing progress was 83 percent, ahead of 71 last year and 76 average. Sheep and lamb death loss rated 0 percent heavy, 70 average, and 30 light. Sheep shorn was at 56 percent, near 59 last year.

Hay and roughage supplies rated 5 percent very short, 16 short, 76 adequate, and 3 surplus.

Stock water supplies rated 1 percent very short, 13 short, 85 adequate, and 1 surplus.
