South Dakota Grain Stocks Up Double Digits from 2019

South Dakota corn stocks in all positions on December 1, 2020 totaled 625 million bushels, up 22% from 2019, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Of the total, 420 million bushels are stored on farms, up 17% from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 205 million bushels, are up 33% from last year.

Soybeans stored in all positions totaled 168 million bushels, up 13% from last year. On-farm stocks of 65.0 million bushels are up 5% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks, at 103 million bushels, are up 18% from 2019.

All wheat stored in all positions totaled 68.5 million bushels, up 11% from a year ago. On-farm stocks of 29.0 million bushels are up 23% from 2019, and off-farm stocks of 39.5 million bushels are up 3% from last year.

Oats stocks totaled 7.65 million bushels, up 57% from last year. On-farm stocks, at 5.70 million bushels, are up 68% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks, at 1.95 million bushels, are up 32% from 2019.

Barley on-farm stocks of 410,000 bushels are up 64% from a year ago.

Sorghum off-farm stocks totaled 3.74 million bushels.

Hay stocks on South Dakota farms totaled 5.80 million tons on December 1, 2020, down 7% from a year earlier.

Grain storage capacity in South Dakota totaled 1.17 billion bushels, up 5 million bushels from December 1, 2019. Total grain storage capacity is comprised of 730 million bushels of on-farm storage, unchanged from last year, and 440 million bushels of off-farm storage, up 5 million bushels from 2019.
