S.D. Planting Still Lagging Behind Averages

For the week ending Sunday, there were 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 11 short, 81 adequate, and 7 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 3 percent very short, 23 short, 70 adequate, and 4 surplus.

Corn planted was 21 percent, well behind 71 last year and 61 for the five-year average.

Soybeans planted was 4 percent, well behind 26 last year, and behind 22 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 11 poor, 53 fair, 35 good, and 0 excellent.

Spring wheat planted was 79 percent, behind 98 last year and 89 average. Emerged was 28 percent, well behind 81 last year and 58 average.

Oats planted was 78 percent, well behind 98 last year, and behind 90 average. Emerged was 32 percent, well behind 89 last year and 66 average.

Sorghum planted was 3 percent, behind 13 last year, and near 5 average.

Pasture and range condition rated 3 percent very poor, 14 poor, 43 fair, 37 good, and 3 excellent.
