Turning a Life's Passion into a Life's Work
South Dakota Ag Connection - 01/18/2017

For Jordan Miller, hunting and fitness are his two passions in life. The day he got the opportunity to combine the two and make a living doing it, he jumped at the chance.

Miller, who was born and raised in small-town Murdo, South Dakota, says hunting and fishing were a major part of his upbringing. His idols, his father, grandfather and uncle, were three very influential people who shaped the person he's become today.

"I was brought up in a family that enjoys the outdoors--we're all outdoor-enthusiasts let's say," Miller laughed. "My earliest memories are those of going on hunts with my dad and uncle. It was the 'thrill of the hunt' you might say--it was the excitement and anticipation of harvesting our game that we looked forward to the most."

If Miller wasn't in the field hunting pheasants, deer, and just about any other game imaginable in South Dakota, he says you could find him in the gym.

"I've always had a passion for sports, fitness and personal wellness," Miller said. "After I graduated from high school, I went on to Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU) in Mitchell, South Dakota, to pursue a degree in Sports Exercise & Wellness. Eventually my end-goal was to become a personal trainer."

But Miller's plans and goals shifted one day when it was time to hit the field with his family. His grandfather and uncle were hesitant to go on the hunt because they felt physically unprepared. Miller just didn't feel right leaving him behind.

That's when he had the idea to combine his two passions, hunting and fitness, to create a fitness program that prepares men and women for large game hunts.

"When you're hunting large game, like deer, antelope or moose, it isn't just a one-day outing," Miller explained. "You're out there for three, four sometimes five days in a row scouting, tracking, hunting, and if you make the kill, cleaning. It's really a labor of love, and worth the work, but it's so much more fun if you're in shape and physically trained for the adventure. Our program prepares you for that, so instead of enjoying only a day or two, you can enjoy three or four days, and a lifetime in the outdoors."

Months later, Miller attended the National Rifle (NRA) Convention in St. Louis. Joined by friends and thousands of fellow like-minded outdoor-enthusiasts, he had the idea to take his outdoor fitness program to the next level: getting it on TV.

He and his business partners scheduled a meeting with regional network, Midco Sports, and after five months of filming, the first season of Run2Gun hit the airwaves.

"For me, it's became more than just hunter fitness...Run2Gun evolved into a passion for the people I meet and work with on a regular basis. There's nothing like turning your life's passion into your life's work," Miller said. "For the people who have buck fever and dream about catching that giant prize, but are hesitant to hit the field because of the strength and endurance it requires, believe me, I get it.

"But that's where our strength and resistance training comes in and we can help you achieve that trophy prize," Miller continued. "Professionally for me, there's nothing more rewarding than to see a client bag their trophy after months of dedicated training. I get just as excited as they do and that's what makes my job special."

Run2Gun is now in its fourth season and will air this month on Midco Sports, reaching viewers in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. This season Miller says the show is expanding to DirectTV and Dish Network customers and will air on the Pursuit Channel, a widely distributed, hunting and fishing channel.

"I never thought I'd be where I am today," Miller smiled. "Hunting, fishing and the outdoors in general are such rich South Dakota traditions and I love that I can share my passion with people from every corner in the US."

Miller now lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with his wife and two children, and conducts his personal training at GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness.
