Drought Stesses Northern Sunflower Crop
South Dakota Ag Connection - 07/13/2017

Minnesota's sunflower crop is looking to be a good one - 88 percent of the state's crop is reported in good to excellent condition. Meanwhile, planting in Texas is nearly complete, with 95 percent of the crop reported planted. That is on track with the five year average.

South Dakota growers report 98 percent of its crop has emerged, well ahead of last year at 80 percent, while North Dakota reports only 4 percent of its crop has bloomed which is well behind last year of 10 percent, reports the National Sunflower Association.

Brighton, Colo., producer Tom Kirkmeyer says his sunflower crop is emerged and looks decent, but he says the area is very dry. Brighton is about 30 miles north of Denver. Kirkmeyer says they haven't received any moisture in about a month. All 1,200 acres of his confection sunflowers are planted on non-irrigated land. Kirkmeyer says despite being dry, he hasn't noticed any issues with disease or insects.
