S.D. Spring Wheat Forecast Up 24 Percent

Based on July 1 conditions, South Dakota's 2019 winter wheat production is forecast at 39.4 million bushels, up 24 percent from last year's crop, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Average yield is forecast at 54 bushels per acre, up 6 bushels from 2018. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 730,000 acres, up 11 percent from a year ago.

Other spring wheat crop is forecast at 37.0 million bushels, down 9 percent from last year. Average yield is forecast at 48 bushels per acre, up 6 bushels from 2018. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 770,000 acres, down 20 percent from a year ago.

Oat production is forecast at 7.91 million bushels, up 1 percent from last year. Average yield is forecast at 93 bushels per acre, up 11 bushels from 2018, and tying the 2014 record. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 85,000 acres, down 11 percent from a year ago.
