North, East Central South Dakota Receive Much Needed Rain

For the week ending Sunday, showers and thunderstorms brought much needed rain to portions of north and east central South Dakota, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Rainfall totals ranged from one-third to over two inches. Some storms turned severe producing localized damage from wind and hail. Overall, statewide moisture conditions remain short to very short as last week's rainfall was not widespread. Wheat harvest continued ahead of average, while third-cutting alfalfa began in some portions of the State. There were 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 43 percent very short, 39 short, 17 adequate, and 1 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 42 percent very short, 39 short, 19 adequate, and 0 surplus.

Winter wheat condition rated 37 percent very poor, 28 poor, 28 fair, 7 good, and 0 excellent. Winter wheat mature was 99 percent. Harvested was 72 percent, behind 78 last year, but well ahead of 46 for the five-year average.

Spring wheat condition rated 43 percent very poor, 33 poor, 16 fair, 7 good, and 1 excellent. Spring wheat coloring was 94 percent, equal to last year, and ahead of 80 average. Mature was 66 percent. Harvested was 28 percent, ahead of 17 both last year and average.

Oats condition rated 25 percent very poor, 26 poor, 32 fair, 15 good, and 2 excellent. Oats coloring was 96 percent, ahead of 86 last year and 82 average. Mature was 75 percent. Harvested was 36 percent, behind 55 last year, and near 37 average.

Barley condition rated 42 percent very poor, 38 poor, 20 fair, 0 good, and 0 excellent. Barley coloring was 88 percent, ahead of 79 last year, and well ahead of 62 average. Mature was 40 percent. Harvested was 1 percent.

Corn condition rated 13 percent very poor, 24 poor, 35 fair, 27 good, and 1 excellent. Corn silking was 46 percent, behind 63 last year and 55 average. Dough was 1 percent, near 4 both last year and average.

Soybean condition rated 12 percent very poor, 22 poor, 41 fair, 23 good, and 2 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 62 percent, behind 80 last year and 73 average. Setting pods was 20 percent, behind 38 last year, and near 24 average.

Sorghum condition rated 20 percent very poor, 37 poor, 39 fair, 4 good, and 0 excellent. Sorghum headed was 19 percent, well behind 39 last year and 35 average. Coloring was 1 percent, near 3 last year, and equal to average.

Sunflower condition rated 11 percent very poor, 27 poor, 58 fair, 4 good, and 0 excellent. Sunflowers blooming was 5 percent, behind 17 last year and 12 average.

Alfalfa condition rated 51 percent very poor, 31 poor, 11 fair, 7 good, and 0 excellent. Alfalfa second cutting was 41 percent, behind 51 last year and 55 average. Third cutting was 1 percent.

Pasture and range condition rated 40 percent very poor, 33 poor, 19 fair, 8 good, and 0 excellent.

Stock water supplies rated 28 percent very short, 33 short, 38 adequate, and 1 surplus.
