S.D. Crops Progressing Near or Above Average

For the week ending Sunday, dry, warm weather continued to impact pasture and range conditions, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. A majority of pasture and range was rated in fair to poor condition as moderate to severe drought conditions remained across much of western South Dakota. Major field activities included cutting silage and preparing for winter wheat seeding. There were 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 10 percent very short, 28 short, 61 adequate, and 1 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 10 percent very short, 34 short, 55 adequate, and 1 surplus.

Corn condition rated 5 percent very poor, 13 poor, 30 fair, 44 good, and 8 excellent. Corn dough was 91 percent, near 87 last year and 88 for the five-year average. Dented was 45 percent, near 43 last year, and ahead of 39 average. Mature was 5 percent, near 2 last year and 3 average.

Spring wheat harvested was 91 percent, near 92 last year and 87 average.

Soybeans condition rated 3 percent very poor, 10 poor, 28 fair, 50 good, and 9 excellent. Soybeans setting pods was 96 percent, near 94 last year and 95 average. Dropping leaves was 14 percent, near 15 last year and 12 average.

Barley mature was 98 percent, near 96 last year and 97 average. Harvested was 93 percent, ahead of 78 last year and 80 average.

Sorghum condition rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 43 fair, 53 good, and 1 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 53 percent, ahead of 42 last year and 47 average. Mature was 8 percent, ahead of 2 both last year and average.

Sunflowers condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 poor, 39 fair, 51 good, and 2 excellent. Sunflowers blooming was 79 percent, behind 96 last year and 95 average. Ray flowers dried was 13 percent, behind 28 last year and 24 average.

Alfalfa hay condition rated 8 percent very poor, 22 poor, 48 fair, 22 good, and 0 excellent. Alfalfa hay second cutting was 81 percent, behind 98 last year and 97 average. Third cutting was 57 percent, ahead of 42 last year and 51 average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 8 percent very poor, 19 poor, 36 fair, 36 good, and 1 excellent. Stock water supplies rated 7 percent very short, 26 short, 66 adequate, and 1 surplus.
