All S.D. Crop Forecasts Down from 2016

Based on August 1 conditions, South Dakota's 2017 corn crop is forecast at 672 million bushels, down 19 percent from last year, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Acreage harvested for grain is estimated at 4.80 million acres, down 6 percent from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 140 bushels per acre, down 21 bushels from last year.

Soybean production is forecast at 220 million bushels, 14 percent below last year's record. Area for harvest, at 5.36 million acres, is up 4 percent from 2016's record. Yield is forecast at 41 bushels per acre, down 8.5 bushels from last year.

South Dakota's 2017 winter wheat crop is forecast at 24.7 million bushels, down 61 percent from last year's crop. Harvested acreage is estimated at 650,000 acres, down 41 percent from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 38 bushels per acre, down 20 bushels from last year.

Other spring wheat production is forecast at 30.1 million bushels, down 36 percent from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 940,000 acres, down 10 percent from a year ago. The yield, forecast at 32 bushels per acre, is down 13 bushels from last year.

Oat production, at 6.30 million bushels, is down 30 percent from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 100,000 acres, down 9 percent from a year ago. The yield is forecast at 63 bushels per acre, down 19 bushels from last year.

Sorghum yield is forecast at 59 bushels per acre, down 20 bushels from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 240,000 acres, up 20 percent from a year ago. Production, of 14.2 million bushels, is down 10 percent from a year ago.

Alfalfa hay production is forecast at 2.97 million tons, down 13 percent from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 1.65 million acres, down 3 percent from 2016. Expected yield, at 1.80 tons per acre, is down 0.2 tons from last year. All other hay production is forecast at 2.08 million tons, down 1 percent from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 1.60 million acres, up 14 percent from a year ago. Expected yield, at 1.30 tons per acre, is down 0.2 tons from last year.
