$13.6 Million to Modernize Rural South Dakota Infrastructure

The Trump Administration Monday announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $13.6 million in South Dakota to modernize critical drinking water and wastewater infrastructure in four rural South Dakota communities.

"Having access to modern, sanitary, and safe infrastructure plays an essential role in furthering prosperity for these small rural communities," said Julie Gross, South Dakota USDA Rural Development state director. "These upgrades will improve public health and improve economic conditions. Under the leadership of President Trump, Agriculture Secretary Perdue and USDA Rural Development Deputy Under Secretary Bette Brand, USDA continues to be a strong partner with rural communities, because we know that when rural America thrives, all of America thrives."

- The City of McIntosh will use a $193,000 loan and a $302,000 grant to provide additional financing for a project to install a pressure boosting station, water meters and meter pits, and water main replacement where needed within the city of McIntosh, SD. This investment will result in better water pressure for the city, and the capability of the city to accurately measure and bill for the water being used by the citizens. Increased water pressure is needed to alleviate a potential health and sanitary concern with sudden drops in the pressure levels within the system. This project is needed due to the age and condition of the existing water system, including aged water meters. The residents of the city will benefit from the increased water pressure in their homes, as well as reducing the likelihood of any contamination issues from sudden drops in water pressure . - The Town of Delmont will use a $888,000 loan and a $763,800 grant to help alleviate major sewer infiltration and inflow into the soil within the town of Delmont. The town of Delmont is in Douglas County, South Dakota. This project has three different elements within the town of Delmont's sewer infrastructure. First element includes the replacement or lining of approximately 18,500 feet of deficient sewage mains throughout the community, including rehab or replacement of several manholes and construction of three new manholes. The second element is improvements at the wastewater treatment facility, including installation of over 2,000 tons of riprap, embankment construction, pond dike shaping, sludge removal, and improvements to the gravel service road leading to the facility. The third element is to rehabilitate their lift station and to purchase a new generator.

- The City of Madison will use a $3,214,000 loan to help finance the wastewater system improvements in Madison, SD. This aged system will have the existing clay pipe replaced or lined with cured-in-place pipe. Through this funding, 33 manholes will also be replaced. The project will improve the sewer services throughout the city of Madison and provide a rehabilitated collection system. Madison is in Lake County, South Dakota.

- The City of Madison will use a $3,434,000 loan to help finance the storm sewer system improvements in areas of Madison, SD. New storm sewer piping will be installed, the existing storm sewer manholes, junction boxes, and drop inlets will be replaced. In these locations, intersections will be made to meet ABAAS accessibility requirements. Madison is in Lake County, South Dakota.

- The City of Eureka will use a $3,577,000 loan and a $1,300,000 grant to finance improvements to the city of Eureka's sewer collection system. Eureka will replace or reline outdated collection lines throughout the community. These improvements will help alleviate inflow and infiltration caused by deficiencies in the system and will provide a modernized sewer system for the community's residents. The enhancements will provide a more unified sewer collection system for this rural South Dakota community.

Today's announcement is part of a larger statement from USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Bette Brand who announced the Trump Administration is investing $462 million in 161 projects through the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program. These investments will benefit 467,000 residents in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
