Input Invited for Brule, Lyman Historic Architecture Survey

The South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), within the South Dakota State Historical Society at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre, recently contracted with Johnson, Mirmiran, & Thompson, Inc. (JMT, Inc.) to complete a survey of historic architecture in Brule and Lyman counties. JMT, Inc. will be conducting fieldwork in September from the public right-of-way.

The SHPO invites public input on the survey project. Information about the project is available at history.sd.gov/preservation/BruleLymanSurvey.aspx; the website includes a link to a form that members of the public can use to provide SHPO and JMT, Inc. with information about important local history and historic sites in Brule and Lyman counties. The SHPO asks for responses by Sept. 20. Comments may be submitted via email to shpo@state.sd.us.

The SHPO annually conducts surveys of historic architecture to identify and document historic properties that might be eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, the nation's official list of historic places worthy of preservation.

Properties eligible for the National Register are at least 50 years old and historically significant for their association with important events, people, architecture, or archeology. Eligible properties also retain enough original features to convey their significance. Properties listed in the National Register may be eligible for historic preservation grants and tax incentives. Fourteen properties in Brule and Lyman counties have previously been listed in the National Register of Historic Places, including the Chamberlain Bridge on the I-90 business loop, the concrete tipi at the Chamberlain rest area, the Dunlap Methodist Episcopal Church near Torrey Lake, and the gravesite of Iron Nation west of Lower Brule.
