Key issues addressed at SDFU state convention

By Scout Nelson

Family farmers and ranchers from across South Dakota will convene in Huron from December 11-12 for the South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) 109th State Convention. This event offers members a platform to establish policy, engage in discussions on pressing agricultural issues, and honor influential contributors.

Policy Focus and Discussions:

The convention serves as a cornerstone for setting SDFU’s policy agenda. “Members prioritize State Convention because it is where we establish our organization’s policy,” explained Doug Sombke, President of SDFU.

Key issues for discussion include tax reform, competition in livestock markets, eminent domain, rural childcare shortages, and a competition title in the next farm bill. Members will vote on these topics, guiding the SDFU’s future advocacy.

Engagement with National Experts:

To add value to the event, national agricultural experts will provide insights on issues such as market trends, weather patterns, and conservation. Featured speakers include Jared Knock, an expert on sustainable farming; Matt Roberts, an economist specializing in grain and energy markets; and Eric Snodgrass, a principal atmospheric scientist focusing on weather risks.

Recognition of Agricultural Leaders and Youth:

The SDFU convention also celebrates those who contribute to South Dakota’s agricultural resilience. Honorees include leaders who have made significant impacts in agricultural safety, advocacy, and youth leadership.

Scholarships totaling $15,000 will be awarded to winners of the “Farming for the Future” contest, and two South Dakota youth will be recognized as 2024 Torchbearers for their involvement in SDFU programs.

Registration Information:

Registration for the State Convention is now open. The registration fee is $50, and entry is free for students and media representatives. For more details, visit www.sdfu.org.

This annual gathering underscores the dedication of South Dakota’s farming community to improve the industry and support future generations.
