South Dakota Ag Connection - 11/06/2018

4-H members Rebecka Hoffman, Turner County and Colin Frey, Brown County, represented South Dakota competing at the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest held in conjunction with World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis.

"I had a great time getting to judge such high quality dairy cattle on the colored shavings at the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest at World Dairy Expo. It will be one of my most memorable highlights through my 4-H years," said Frey who placed 23rd in the Jersey breed and 26th in the Ayrshire breed.

Frey and Hoffman qualified for the national contest by competing in the senior division of the State 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest held during the 2017 South Dakota State Fair. They were among the top 97 4-H dairy judges from 23 states who qualified to compete in the 2018 contest.

"This competition tests their knowledge of dairy cattle conformation and ability to defend their decisions with oral reasons," explained Megan Kludt, SDSU Extension 4-H Youth Program Advisor - Lincoln County.

Prior to the national contest, the South Dakota 4-H members had the opportunity to participate in practice sessions. They also toured the National Dairy Shrine and Nasco.

"I really enjoyed the experience and it was a great trip. At judging practices, I learned a lot and got to see different dairies and their farm operations," said Hoffman, who placed 25th in the Ayrshire breed.
