South Dakota State University (SDSU) recognized First National Bank in Sioux Falls Agribusiness Division and Brian Gilbert as the 2026 Friend of the Beef Industry Award recipients. The award, presented by the SDSU Department of Animal Science and the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, honors individuals and organizations that make a lasting contribution to the beef industry and support agricultural communities.
The recognition highlights years of dedication to South Dakota cattle producers through agricultural lending, risk management services, leadership development, and industry advocacy. By providing financial tools and support programs, First National Bank in Sioux Falls has helped strengthen the stability and long-term success of many farming and ranching operations across the state.
“Brian and the Ag Division of First National Bank in Sioux Falls have been strong proponents of the cattle industry in South Dakota, and their work has strengthened cattle producers’ financial resilience and the long-term viability of the entire industry,” said Joe Cassady, SD Corn Endowed Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.
Gilbert's connection to agriculture began at an early age. He grew up on a family farm near Hitchcock, South Dakota, where his family raised corn and soybeans and operated a cow-calf enterprise. These experiences helped him gain firsthand knowledge of farming and ranching challenges.
After graduating from SDSU in 2002 with degrees in agricultural business and economics, Gilbert built a career focused on supporting agricultural producers. His understanding of production agriculture, financial planning, and farm operations helps guide lending and risk-management decisions that benefit cattle producers and rural businesses.
“I grew up in farming, and I maintain a cow-calf herd now, so from the producer side I know what they’re facing what they’re up against,” Gilbert said.
Throughout his career, Gilbert has remained committed to helping future generations succeed in agriculture. He works closely with colleagues at First National Bank in Sioux Falls and supports programs that encourage young people to return to family farms and ranches. His efforts focus on helping producers gain access to the financial resources needed to expand and sustain operations.
Gilbert's advocacy extends beyond South Dakota. In July 2025, he testified before Congress on behalf of the Independent Community Bankers of America Rural America and Agriculture Committee. During his testimony, he discussed issues related to farm and ranch credit, risk management, and opportunities for new farmers and ranchers entering the industry.
His leadership has also reached many agricultural organizations and community programs. Gilbert previously served on the boards of the Stockyards Ag Experience, the Independent Community Banks of South Dakota, and participated in the South Dakota Ag and Rural Leadership Program Class IX. These activities demonstrate his commitment to strengthening agriculture, education, and rural development.
His contributions have earned recognition over the years. In 2020, the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce Agri-Business Division named him Agri-Business Citizen of the Year for his dedication to agriculture and community service.
Gilbert continues supporting SDSU and agricultural education through his role on the SDSU Alumni & Foundation Board of Trustees. In addition, First National Bank partnered with the university to establish the Brian D. Gilbert Scholarship. The scholarship helps students pursuing agricultural careers and supports the development of future agricultural leaders.
The Friend of the Beef Industry Award recognizes more than individual achievement. It highlights the importance of partnerships that strengthen agriculture, support producers, and encourage future generations to remain involved in farming and ranching.
