National Agriculture Day is a special time to appreciate the hard work of farmers in South Dakota and across the nation. This year marks the 41st celebration, emphasizing the importance of agriculture in our daily lives. From the food on our tables to the clothes on our backs and the fuel in our cars, farmers play a crucial role.

South Dakota, known for its rich agricultural heritage, produces a variety of crops like soybeans, corn, wheat, and sunflowers, along with raising beef and dairy cattle, pigs, chickens, and more. The state is renowned for its use of corn in diverse products, highlighting agriculture's versatility.

Agriculture stands as South Dakota's leading industry, with impressive figures that speak volumes about its impact. The state boasts over 3 million cattle, 2.3 million hogs, and millions of turkeys and sheep, contributing significantly to both the local and national economy.

A 2021 study showcased the industry's $11.7 billion contribution to the state's economy, underlining the sector's importance in generating income and jobs.

South Dakota's agricultural prowess places it among the top states for producing bison, oats, honey, and more, demonstrating its key role in feeding and supporting communities far beyond its borders.

The state is home to 28,299 farms, covering over 42 million acres of land. The 2022 Census of Agriculture provides a detailed look into the demographics and operations of these farms, emphasizing the diversity and dedication of South Dakota's agricultural community.

As we celebrate National Agriculture Day, it's a chance to recognize the enduring efforts of South Dakota's farmers and their indispensable contribution to our lives and economy.
