South Dakota State University Extension is hosting a fall garden workshop on October 19, 2026, at McCrory Gardens in Brookings, South Dakota. The in-person event runs from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and combines horticulture lessons with a hands-on fall craft.
The workshop gives participants a chance to learn about cut flower production. This session covers basic tips and techniques for growing flowers that can be cut and used in arrangements. Participants can learn how good growing practices can help produce attractive flowers for home use and seasonal displays.
The workshop also focuses on gourd diseases. Pumpkins and other gourds can develop diseases that affect plant growth, leaves, stems, or fruit. Learning about common problems can help gardeners understand what causes them and how to keep pumpkins healthy. The information is useful for people who grow gourds in gardens or small garden spaces.
After the learning sessions, participants take part in a guided dried-flower pumpkin craft. They decorate one pumpkin with dried flowers and other natural materials. Sydney Paulsen, along with Robin and the workshop team, provides guidance during the creative activity. The finished decoration can be taken home and used as a seasonal display.
The workshop costs $30 per person. The registration fee includes one pumpkin, dried flowers, other craft materials, horticulture education, and a finished fall decoration. This gives participants both educational information and a practical activity during one evening.
The event is held at McCrory Gardens, located at 631 22nd Ave. in Brookings. The workshop is designed to connect gardening knowledge with a fun fall project. It can be an opportunity for gardeners who want to learn more about flowers and gourds while creating a decoration.
