Learn Organic Livestock Transition Tips with Experts

By Scout Nelson

The SDSPA Organic program is hosting a free one-hour webinar on November 5 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., focusing on the opportunities and challenges of transitioning to organic swine and lamb production.

The session will feature Dr. Angela Jackson, an advisor and organic transition expert from South Dakota, along with Kevin O’Connell, an experienced organic livestock producer from O’Connell Organic Acres in Iowa.

Participants will gain practical insights on key aspects of organic production, including steps for certification, understanding organic standards, animal welfare considerations, pasture requirements, and effective marketing strategies for organic pork and lamb.

This webinar is designed for both new producers considering organic certification and those already working toward it, offering real-world examples and expert guidance to support their journey.

The program is part of the USDA Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP), which falls under the USDA Organic Transition Initiative and is administered by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) National Organic Program (NOP).

To participate, interested individuals can register in advance. For additional information, contact SDSPA Organic at 605-624-1966 or email sdspa.organic@gmail.com.
