Renewable Fuel Boost Supports Farmers Growth

Renewable Fuel Boost Supports Farmers Growth

By Scout Nelson

The Trump administration announced a record increase in the renewable fuels mandate, bringing renewed hope to farmers across South Dakota. This policy change supports higher demand for corn and soybeans, which are widely used to produce ethanol and biodiesel.

The Renewable Volume Obligation (RVO) increases from 22.33 billion gallons to 25.98 billion gallons. This higher blending requirement encourages oil refineries to use more renewable fuels, which directly benefits crop producers.

Farmers continue to face challenges in the market, but this development offers a positive outlook. Increased demand for corn and soybeans helps improve price opportunities and supports farm income stability.

“Family farmers have not had a lot of good news in the marketplace lately, so this increase to a domestic demand for corn and soybeans so that oil refineries can meet their Renewable Volume Obligation (RVO) by blending more ethanol and biodiesel gives us some hope as we go into the 2026 planting season,” said Doug Sombke, President of South Dakota Farmers Union.

Global factors, including the war in Iran, also influence this decision. The increase in renewable fuel use gives consumers more access to fuel produced within the country, helping reduce dependence on foreign energy sources.

“This gives people the choice,” Sombke said. “Do you want to use a homegrown fuel that’s renewable, or do you want to use a fuel produced outside of the U.S. that is bad for the environment?”

The mandate goes into effect in 2027, giving farmers time to prepare for future planting seasons. Many producers are now planning with greater confidence as stronger demand may lead to improved market conditions.

Overall, the increase in renewable fuel requirements supports both the agriculture and energy sectors. It promotes cleaner fuel options while creating new opportunities for farmers and strengthening rural economies.
