The South Dakota Farmers Union recently celebrated its Legislative Day by recognizing two key state legislators for their exceptional service to agriculture. Representatives Kadyn Wittman and Michael Rohl received the Distinguished Service Award for their efforts in supporting and advancing the state’s primary industry during a special ceremony held at the state Capitol on March 5.
Doug Sombke, President of the South Dakota Farmers Union, highlighted the importance of having advocates like Wittman and Rohl in the legislature. “Policy put in place by our legislators impacts the lives of South Dakota’s family farmers and ranchers. It is obvious by their actions that Rep. Wittman and Sen. Rohl understand this,” Sombke stated.
Both legislators have been proactive in addressing critical issues pertinent to agriculture. Rep. Wittman, representing Sioux Falls, has been involved in various initiatives, including a significant law that made state IDs free for homeless individuals, which was passed on July 1, 2024. This legislation has already helped 274 South Dakotans, easing their ability to secure employment and access services.
Sen. Rohl, from Aberdeen, has been a vocal advocate for landowner rights and agricultural issues. He has successfully authored 25 bills since taking office, with a notable focus on preventing the misuse of eminent domain for carbon pipelines and protecting the property rights of landowners. His efforts reflect a deep commitment to the agricultural community and the broader interests of rural South Dakota.
The legislators' work extends beyond mere policy. Both have engaged directly with their constituents and the agricultural community to ensure their legislative efforts reflect the real-world needs of those they serve. Their dedication not only underscores the importance of informed legislative advocacy but also highlights the broader implications of their work on South Dakota’s economy and way of life.
As the 2025 Legislative Session continues, the contributions of Wittman and Rohl will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of South Dakota’s agricultural landscape. Their recognition by the South Dakota Farmers Union underscores the significant impact of their legislative efforts and their ongoing commitment to the state’s farming and ranching communities.
