South Dakota State University Department of Animal Science hosted its annual Celebration of Animal Science Achievements and Excellence on April 23 at McCrory Gardens. The event recognized students, faculty, alumni, judging teams, and industry supporters for their contributions and accomplishments throughout the academic year.
“The Celebration of Animal Science Achievements and Excellence reflects the very best of our department,” said John Jaeger, Calvin and Mary Hayenga Endowed Department Head of Animal Science. “From our judging teams and undergraduate researchers to our outstanding seniors, alumni and supporters, this event highlights the collective commitment to excellence that defines our program.”
Several judging teams were recognized during the event. The Livestock Judging Team, Meats Judging Team, and Wool Judging Team were honored for their strong performances and dedication throughout the season. Many students also received Leonard and Violet Wulf Travel Awards and other special recognitions.
The department also recognized the 2025-2026 Animal Science Ambassadors for helping recruit future students and represent the department at events throughout the year. Additional recognition went to the Meat Science Quiz Bowl Team and the Academic Quadrathlon Team for their competition success.
SDSU honored 15 undergraduate students for conducting research during the academic year. Several students also graduated with honors for their academic performance and leadership.
Individual awards recognized excellence in teaching, research, student leadership, and industry service. Haley Mouser received the Outstanding Student in Animal Science award after participating in judging teams, research projects, and student organizations.
Warren Rusche, assistant professor in the Department of Animal Science and SDSU Extension feedlot specialist, received the Richard Wahlstrom Award for Excellence in Scholarship for his work in cattle feeding research and Extension education.
Dakotaland Feeds LLC was named Friend of the Department for supporting student learning, internships, and educational programs. The event concluded by recognizing distinguished alumni and celebrating the department’s ongoing commitment to education, leadership, and industry advancement.
