Spencer Jacobson: Champion of South Dakota State University's Animal Science Department

South Dakota State University's Animal Science Department has found an unwavering supporter in Spencer Jacobson, a dedicated alumnus who graduated in 1995. Recently honored as the 2023 Friend of the Department of Animal Science, Jacobson resides in Brandon, South Dakota, and works as the hog procurement business manager at Smithfield Foods in Sioux Falls.

Jacobson contributions to the department span several different areas, including industry connections, guest lecturing, research collaboration, and philanthropic efforts.

With an extensive background in the swine industry, Jacobson plays a crucial role in connecting SDSU faculty, staff, and graduate students with relevant individuals in the field. His expertise and experiences make him a valuable guest lecturer for animal science classes such as introduction to animal science, livestock evaluation and marketing, and swine production.

Jacobson actively supports SDSU graduate students and faculty in their research endeavors, particularly in investigating swine carcass characteristics and above ground swine burial methods, an ongoing nationally recognized project.

Beyond academia, Jacobson's commitment to the Animal Science Department extends to philanthropic initiatives. He serves as the primary contact for the popular pork bundle and pork loin donations for the annual SDSU Pork Classic basketball game. Through this contribution, approximately $10,000 in scholarships are generated each year, benefiting animal science students and student athletes alike.

The SDSU Pork Classic, a collaborative event between the Animal Science Department and SDSU Athletics, not only supports students but also recognizes and celebrates South Dakota's pork industry.

Spencer Jacobson's enduring support and dedication to the Animal Science Department at South Dakota State University exemplify his commitment to advancing the field and fostering educational opportunities for future generations.
