In July, Tyson Foods will terminate the employment of 262 employees at its Dakota Dunes facility, including some executive staff members. This development follows Tyson's decision to relocate corporate employees from their Chicago and Dakota Dunes offices to the company's world headquarters in Springdale, Arkansas, as announced in October 2022.
The notice filed under the South Dakota Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act website revealed that many employees opted not to relocate to the new headquarters, leading to the termination of most team members in South Dakota by July 31. Tyson Foods offered relocation assistance to support the move to northwest Arkansas but provided severance benefits for those employees who chose not to relocate based on tenure and job grade.
The termination notice highlighted the absence of collective bargaining agreements among the affected employees, indicating that they will not have bumping rights for alternative positions. An addendum document listed various executive roles at the Dakota Dunes corporate office that will be affected.
While Tyson Foods previously estimated around 1,000 employees between the Chicago and Dakota Dunes offices to be impacted by the relocation, the majority of those affected are white-collar workers. The company cited the desire to foster collaboration, enhance team member agility, and enable faster decision-making as reasons behind the move to consolidate their domestic corporate team members into a single location.
