New weaned calf risk protection program launches in South Dakota
South Dakota Ag Connection - 11/29/2023

The South Dakota Farm Bureau (SDFB) is set to host two crucial meetings, unveiling the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) latest venture - the Weaned Calf Risk Protection insurance option. This novel program, currently in its pilot phase in four states, aims to bolster risk management strategies for livestock producers.

South Dakota, as a participating state, presents a unique opportunity for local livestock owners to explore and understand this new insurance option. The SDFB meetings are designed to provide comprehensive insights into the program, aiding producers in making informed decisions.

Cody McCann, a USDA risk management specialist, will spearhead these sessions, offering in-depth explanations of the program's nuances. Attendees can also look forward to a complimentary lunch, adding a communal flavor to the event.

Details of the Meetings:

December 6, 11:30 a.m. MT, at Wall Community Center, 501 Main St, Wall, S.D.

December 7, 11:30 a.m. CST, at Mitchell Technical College, Technology Center Amphitheater, 1800 E Spruce, Mitchell, S.D.

For additional information, livestock owners are encouraged to reach out to SDFB Regional Managers, Lowell Mesman (605-280-1319) or Helen Geppert (605-770-8581). These sessions are important for those looking to navigate the complexities of livestock insurance under the new USDA program.
