Patty Hacker, a professor in the Department of Health and Nutritional Sciences at South Dakota State University, will receive the Society of Health and Physical Educators American Honor Award at the SHAPE America National Convention and Expo in Boston Thursday.

"For 44 years Patty Hacker has displayed a sense of pride and confidence as she works with many South Dakota teachers, future teachers and thousands of students, kindergarten thru college," said SHAPE America President Jackie Lund of Georgia State University, noting recipients are chosen based upon devotion to the health profession, integrity and contributions to the advancement of health and physical education. "Passionate about teaching and learning, she has focused on developing reflective practitioners and teachers who can teach students to be physically active for a lifetime--and to love working with children while they are teaching them."

Hacker had been awarded with SHAPE South Dakota Honor Awards in 1998 and 2016. She has also received the SDSU Teaching Excellence Award in 1996. As an author and grant writer, Hacker has written 16 grants, 12 publications and 3 articles.

She earned her doctorate from the University of Wyoming in physical education pedagogy, her master's degree in physical education from West Virginia University and her undergraduate degree in education from Glenville State College.

Hacker is involved with the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning as a scholar and is engaged through various roles with SHAPE America.
