South Dakota Hog Inventory Up 11 Percent

South Dakota inventory of all hogs and pigs on June 1, 2020, was 2.07 million head, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

This was up 11% from June 1, 2019, and up 2% from March 1, 2020.

Breeding hog inventory, at 280,000 head, was up 6% from June 1, 2019, but down 2% from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 1.79 million head, was up 12% from last year, and up 3% from last quarter.

The March - May 2020 South Dakota pig crop, at 1.72 million head, was up 17% from 2019.Sows farrowed during the period totaled 140,000 head, up 14% from last year. The average pigs saved per litter was a record high 12.30 for the March - May period, compared to 11.95 last year. South Dakota hog producers intend to farrow 137,000 sows during the June - August 2020quarter, up 6% from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago. Intended farrowings for September - November 2020 are 138,000 sows, unchanged from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago.
