2024 SD State Fair sees record attendance

By Scout Nelson

Tens of thousands of visitors flocked to the 2024 South Dakota State Fair, which took place from August 28 to September 2, celebrating six days of family fun, incredible entertainment, and cherished traditions.

From exciting live music performances to mouth-watering fair food, the State Fair continues to be a beloved destination for friends and families to create lifelong memories together.

This year’s Fair featured a variety of attractions, including six stages of entertainment, thrilling carnival rides, world-class livestock shows, agricultural education, and countless shopping opportunities.

Youth Participation and Education

Youth involvement was notable, with nearly 1,500 exhibitors entering over 8,000 exhibits in both open class livestock and non-livestock competitions. The Arts & Education Building hosted more than last year, displaying 6,300 education exhibits. A total of 9,515 4-H display exhibits, livestock entries, and youth in action contributions were showcased. Additionally, 367 FFA exhibitors showcased over 975 entries.

Over 600 students and teachers from 35 schools participated in South Dakota’s Largest Classroom, while nearly 50 schools and libraries took part in the Read and Win program, distributing 8,000 youth daily admission gate passes to young readers.

Attendance and Economic Impact

The Fair welcomed 186,255 guests, marking a four percent increase from 2023. Nearly 2,000 campers filled the fairgrounds, contributing to the event's success. Fairgoers spent over $3.2 million on goods, services, and concessions, generating more than $266,000 in tax revenue—a 20 percent increase from the previous year.

Improving the Fairgrounds

A groundbreaking for The SHED occurred on August 29. This new facility will be home to Open Class Sheep and serve as a multi-purpose center featuring a show arena and educational space.

The indoor center will provide interactive learning about the sheep industry and opportunities in agriculture, along with highlighting the state’s rich agricultural history.

The 140th South Dakota State Fair is scheduled for August 27 – September 1, 2025. For more information, contact the Fair office at 800-529-0900 or visit www.sdstatefair.com. You can also find them on Facebook, Instagram, and X.
