Balanced Moisture and Diverse Crop Performance in South Dakota


The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service has released its report on fieldwork, crop conditions, and pasture health in South Dakota for the week ending July 2. With 5.7 suitable fieldwork days, farmers had opportunities for cultivation activities.

South Dakota's topsoil and subsoil have relatively balanced moisture supplies, contributing to the state's crop state. Topsoil moisture levels are 17% very short, 34% short, 46% adequate, and 3% surplus, while subsoil moisture levels are 16% very short, 36% short, 44% adequate, and 4% surplus.

Corn, a major crop in South Dakota, displayed a range of conditions. The corn crop was assessed as 3% very poor, 9% poor, 39% fair, 42% good, and 7% excellent. Progress in corn silking mirrored the five-year average at 1%, indicating an on-track growth stage.

Soybeans, another significant crop, showcased comparable patterns. The soybean crop was rated as 4% very poor, 10% poor, 38% fair, 43% good, and 5% excellent. Soybeans blooming progress reached 13%, slightly surpassing last year's 9% and aligning with the historical average.

Winter wheat faced challenges with 23% poor, 28% fair, 25% good, and 1% excellent conditions. Head progress was 98%, slightly lower than the previous year's 99% but consistent with the average. Only 1% of the crop was harvested by the specified time.

Spring wheat showed promising growth, with conditions rated as 11% very poor, 22% poor, 41% fair, 23% good, and 3% excellent. Progress reached 89%, surpassing previous year's 61% and historical average of 71%.

Oats enjoyed favorable conditions, with ratings of 7% very poor, 20% poor, 32% fair, 35% good, and 6% excellent. Oats headed progress reached 94%, surpassing both the previous year's 72% and the historical average of 78%.

Sorghum displayed positive development, with conditions reported as 4% very poor, 10% poor, 31% fair, 52% good, and 3% excellent. Sorghum headed progress stood at 20%, Surpassing both the previous year's 4% and the historical average.

Sunflowers emerged with a promising start, as conditions were rated 0% very poor, 3% poor, 40% fair, 55% good, and 2% excellent. Sunflowers emerged progress was recorded at 75%.

Pasture and range conditions varied across the state, with ratings reported as 10% very poor, 14% poor, 37% fair, 34% good, and 5% excellent.
