South Dakota Boosts Drought Support for Ranchers

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota is expanding its response to severe drought conditions through new measures designed to support rural communities, farmers, ranchers, and local fire departments.

South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden signed Executive Order 2026-10, which expands state assistance for rural fire departments outside the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District.

The order allows South Dakota Wildland Fire to provide additional resources when needed to protect lives and property.

“As a volunteer firefighter, I understand that every second counts when attacking a fire. And as a lifelong rancher, I recognize the difficulty feeding livestock during this ongoing drought,” said Rhoden. “Supplementing local resources with approved state assistance will improve response time, saving lives and property.”

More than 90% of South Dakota is experiencing abnormally dry or moderate to extreme drought conditions.

The dry weather has increased wildfire risks and reduced feed supplies for livestock. The new order also extends hay hauling flexibility through November 15, 2026.

Farmers and ranchers can move hay two hours before sunrise and two hours after sunset. Haulers must use required warning lights and cannot operate overweight vehicles.

Free permits are available for oversizing hay loads up to 12 feet wide. The permits can also extend hauling hours from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. when vehicles display proper oversize load signs.

The Governor previously activated the state Drought Task Force to monitor conditions and respond quickly to emergencies. The task force supports the new drought measures.
