Kevin Scott, a fourth-generation farmer from Valley Springs, South Dakota, is being recognized as the 2026 Eminent Leader in Agriculture, Family and Community by South Dakota State University.
South Dakota State University highlighted Scott’s journey from growing up on a family farm to becoming a farmer and agricultural leader.
He originally did not expect farming to be his career, but his experience with his future father-in-law, Dean Gage, changed his plans. Scott studied general agriculture at SDSU and learned new farming methods that helped save time and improve farm work.
“Dean and my dad opened my eyes to innovate and change things to help get the work done,” Scott said.
Scott and his wife, Jannell, began farming independently in 1983. He also took over a local seed dealership, which increased his interest in seed genetics and soybean varieties. Local soybean test plots later helped lead him to the South Dakota Soybean Association.
Scott became a strong advocate for soybean farmers and served as president of both the South Dakota Soybean Association and the American Soybean Association. His leadership focused on policies that affect farmers and family farms.
“Policy developed in D.C. impacts our family farms — EPA decisions, USDA decisions, administration decisions — without somebody fighting for you, the ability to farm could be taken away from us,” explained Scott.
Scott also gained a broader understanding of the soybean industry and its importance around the world.
“Our soybeans go everywhere,” Scott said. “And we have a thousand different products soybeans are a part of. Learning about what soybeans become after they leave South Dakota is eye-opening.”
In 2026, Scott becomes executive director of the South Dakota Soybean Association. At the same time, he prepares to pass his farm operation to his son, Jordan, who also has soybean leadership experience.
“When Jordan said he was interested in farming full time, I count it among our family’s many blessings,” Scott said. “Farming together with my wife, son and grandkids brings a lot of joy and the opportunity to continue our family’s legacy.”
Scott receives the 2026 Eminent Leader honor during a September 18 banquet at McCrory Gardens Education and Visitor Center in Brookings. He is honored alongside Mary Duvall, Patty DeZeeuw, and Jerry Schmitz.
