Participants will explore whole farm planning strategies, product diversification, and methods for spreading risk across different agricultural scopes, tailored specifically for transitioning organic producers in South Dakota.
The field day will feature a tour of Berrybrook Organics, where you can see integrated regenerative and organic practices in action. Learn about effective soil health management, the benefits of covering crops, strategic crop rotations, and weed management techniques. Additionally, the event will cover the importance of buffer zones and adherence to organic standards to ensure compliance and sustainability.
Expert guidance will be provided by Dr. Angela K. Jackson, SDSPA’s Organic Ag Transitioning Advisor and an experienced organic farmer. Dr. Jackson will discuss the benefits and challenges associated with diversified transitioning operations in organic farming. This is a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights from seasoned professionals and to ask specific questions about your own farming operations.
The event also includes a session on how to manage risks associated with organic farming, from revenue fluctuations to liability issues, and advice on scaling value-added products to boost farm revenue.
Furthermore, discussions will cover the complexities of managing multiple scope organic certifications, from crops to livestock and handling, to optimize whole farm planning and revenue streams.
