SDSU Students Earn Top Beef Scholarships

By Scout Nelson

Two doctoral students from South Dakota State University’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences have been honoured with prestigious Certified Angus Beef Colvin Scholarships.

Becca Francis and Sydni Lammers were among eight students recognized nationwide for their academic excellence, leadership, and research in the beef industry. The scholarship celebrates students who show dedication and passion for advancing the beef sector.

Francis, pursuing a Ph.D. under associate professor Zachary Smith, received a $5,000 scholarship. Her research includes improving feedlot calf health through feed additives and managing dairy-beef crossbred calves.

“Being highlighted as a top student in our industry is always really nice,” Francis said, “and (so is) getting to even meet other scholarship recipients and people out in the industry (who are past recipients).”

Smith praised Francis’ enthusiasm, saying, “(Francis’) enthusiasm and positive attitude are contagious, and she brings a unique perspective to her work… Becca is a testament to the caliber of students at South Dakota State University.”

Lammers, also from Texas, received a $2,500 scholarship. Under professor Amanda Blair, her research focuses on how cow nutrition affects offspring growth and beef quality, especially intramuscular fat development through fetal programming.

Lammers said, “The Certified Angus Beef scholarship has always been something I’ve wanted to apply for… I never really felt I had the credentials… until I came (to SDSU).”

Blair described Lammers as a future leader in the beef industry, noting her understanding of beef production, consumer trends, and commitment to beef quality assurance.

John Jaeger, department head of Animal Science, emphasized the recognition reflects not only the students’ efforts but also the quality of SDSU’s animal science programs.
