Grassland guardians shine at South Dakota speech contest

By Scout Nelson

On April 6, 2024, the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) and the South Dakota Association of Conservation Districts co-sponsored the 63rd annual Resource Conservation Speech Contest State Finals at the State Capitol in Pierre. The event highlighted the importance of grasslands with the theme “Working Grassland, Why Should We Care?”

First place went to Abigail Lewis, a sophomore at Flandreau High School, who won a $1,200 scholarship. She was sponsored by the Moody Conservation District. Abigail is the daughter of Paul and Jessica Lewis from Flandreau.

Second place was claimed by Bobbi Eide, another sophomore, from Gettysburg High School, who earned an $800 scholarship. Her sponsors were from the Potter County Conservation District. Bobbi's parents are Gerri and Shon Eide of Gettysburg.

The third place and a $500 scholarship were awarded to Johnathon Neuharth, sponsored by the Stanley County Conservation District. He is the son of Levi and Crystal Neuharth from Fort Pierre.

Touchstone Energy Cooperatives of South Dakota provided the scholarships. These contests start locally at the district level, allowing two students per district to progress to area contests. The top two from each area then compete at the state finals.

Looking ahead, next year's contest theme will be “Let Your Natural Resources Teach You Their Lessons.” Interested students or guardians can contact their local conservation district office or call DANR at 605.773.3623 for participation details.
