Midwest Summit Spotlights Agricultural Export Opportunities

Midwest Summit Spotlights Agricultural Export Opportunities

At the heart of Sioux Falls, Midwest leaders recently gathered to deliberate on a pressing concern, the evolving landscape of agricultural exports. Spearheaded by South Dakota Trade, this initiative emphasizes not just trading more, but trading smarter.

Luke Lindberg, the driving force behind South Dakota Trade, highlighted the ever-changing dynamics of global trade. Stressing the importance of market diversification, Lindberg cautioned against the risks of banking too heavily on traditional partners, specifically China. It wasn't just cautionary tales. Lindberg also underscored the overlooked opportunities in markets like Israel, UAE, and Bahrain.

Trade is increasingly fluid due to geopolitics and unpredictable events, like the COVID-19 pandemic. Lindberg believes the future lies in nurturing a global network of partners, while Secretary Hunter Roberts of South Dakota's Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources advocates for a regional approach for a sustainable agricultural future in the Midwest.

The past year saw the U.S. transition from a food exporter to an importer. While China expands its market reach aggressively, the U.S. needs a clear and cohesive trade strategy. Addressing this and offering solutions was keynote speaker Linda McMahon. Besides emphasizing workforce development in agriculture, she discussed the potential of agribusiness apprenticeships.

A highlight of the event was a panel on the Abraham Accords, promoting peace and trade with Israel and its Arab neighbors. Another session engaged in a spirited debate on the future of U.S.-China relations, providing a comprehensive outlook on potential opportunities and challenges.

Closer to home, the focus turned to domestic policies and the impact of federal legislations like the Ocean Shipping and Reform Act on global supply chains.
