Corn for silage production is 6.60 million tons, up 10% from 2021. Yield of 12.0 tons per acre is unchanged from last year. Farmers harvested 550,000 acres, up 10% from 2021. Total acreage planted to corn for all purposes is 5.75 million acres, down 7% from last year.
Soybean production for 2022 totaled 193 million bushels, down 11% from 2021. Yield, at 38 bushels per acre, is down 2.0 bushels from a year earlier. Area for harvest, at 5.07 million acres, is down 6% from 2021. Total acreage planted is 5.10 million acres, down 6% from last year.
Alfalfa hay production, at 2.81 million tons, is up 44% from a year earlier. The average yield, at 1.70 tons per acre, is up 0.20 ton per acre from 2021. Area harvested, at 1.65 million acres, is up 27% from 2021. Alfalfa haylage and greenchop at 210,000 tons, is up 40% from a year earlier. Oil sunflower production in 2022 is 1.01 billion pounds, up 36% from last year. Yield, at 1,740 pounds per acre, is up 140 pounds from a year earlier. Principal crop area planted totaled 16.6 million acres, down slightly from 2021. Area harvested, at 16 million acres, is up slightly from last year.
