Rancher wins big for future farmers at national award

Rancher wins big for future farmers at national award

By Scout Nelson

David Reis, a South Dakota rancher in Lyman County, uses a priest's teachings on youth's importance in community sustainability to apply this wisdom to agriculture and community involvement. His dedication earned him the Bruce Miller Membership Award at the 2024 National Farmers Union Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Leading with a forward-thinking approach, Reis understands that adapting to change and welcoming fresh perspectives are crucial for the future of farming. His efforts have significantly increased membership of the Farmers Union, bringing in young ranch families who contribute new ideas and energy.

Reis's commitment to the community and agriculture extends through his long-standing involvement in various organizations. Since 2018, he has served on the South Dakota Farmers Union state Board of Directors, striving to give back to the community that has enriched his life.

On his family ranch, alongside his wife Brenda, Reis has spent nearly five decades working the land, raising a family, and participating in local rodeos and community events.

His passion for ranch life, from managing grasslands to navigating the rugged terrain on horseback, underscores a deep connection to his heritage and the environment.

The Reis family's involvement in rodeo and local community development, including hosting dinner theaters that fund scholarships for local youth, highlights their commitment to the next generation.

David and Brenda also encourage their grandchildren's future by helping them start their own cattle herds, teaching them the value of hard work and investment from a young age.

David Reis's membership in agricultural and community organizations, such as the South Dakota Stockgrowers, R-CALF, and the South Dakota Beef Industry Council, reflects his broad impact on the industry and his community. His work embodies the spirit of giving back and paving the way for future generations in farming and ranching.

Through dedication and leadership, David Reis has become a beacon of hope for the agricultural community, demonstrating that with a commitment to youth, innovation, and community, the future of farming is bright.
