Rachel Zook, a senior civil and environmental engineering major at South Dakota State University, is one of nine students nationwide to receive the Samuel Fletcher Tapman ASCE Student Chapter Scholarship for 2022-23.
The $2,900 award from the American Society of Civil Engineering goes to ASCE student members who are in good standing with their chapter, serve in the chapter and participate in its activities.
Zook, a 4.0 student from Omaha, Neb., is the club's 2022 president. In 2021, she was vice president and she was responsible for documenting club activities, which resulted in the chapter winning the Ridgway Award for having the best ASCE chapter in the nation.
Zook also is vice president of Chi Epsilon and the secretary of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society. She also is involved with the chapter's concrete canoe entry, Alpha Xi Delta sorority and Oasis college ministry as well as working as an SDSU Admissions Ambassador.
Zach Gutzmer, adviser of the SDSU chapter, said, "Rachel has become a tremendous leader in our ASCE student chapter. She has been an integral part of our success and she deserves the recognition this scholarship brings."
Zook is a 2019 graduate of Millard South High School in metro Omaha.
The last time the chapter had a Tapman award winner was in 2013, when it went to Emily Sumner, also of Omaha. Sumner also won the award in 2012.
