SDSU Gains Recognition in Bison Education

SDSU Gains Recognition in Bison Education

By Scout Nelson

Four students from South Dakota State University are recognised for their work in bison education and research after receiving national bison industry scholarships. The awards come from the Throlson American Bison Foundation and the Rich Zahringer Memorial Scholarship Fund. Together, eight students across North America receive a combined total of $30,000 to support studies in agriculture, business, and bison-focused research.

The Rich Zahringer Fund awards $6,000 to students who study agricultural business and accounting, while the Throlson Foundation provides $24,000 to students completing academic work connected to bison science. SDSU leaders share that the recognition highlights the university’s strong presence in bison education.

Kafka said working hands-on with bison and learning from industry leaders influenced his decision to pursue graduate research related to bison production. He also emphasized the importance of bison to conservation and sustainable agriculture, explaining that their ecological contributions and multiuse value provide strong motivation for students pursuing careers in the industry.

Faculty members add that SDSU’s strong connection to the bison industry is an important factor in the success of these students.

Scholarships reduce financial pressure and give students more opportunities for research, industry engagement, and field-based training. SDSU also celebrates the achievement of one alum who is among the eight scholarship recipients across North America.

The university continues to expand its bison education programs. New offerings include a bison studies minor and certificate, along with courses such as Introduction to Bison Management and Advanced Bison Production.

These programs help students understand the relationships between bison, ecosystems, and people. Through research, partnerships, and hands-on learning, SDSU strengthens its role as a leader in bison scholarship and industry support.
