SDSU Offers Beef Quality Training for Cattle Producers

SDSU Offers Beef Quality Training for Cattle Producers

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension is offering a Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training course in Madison, South Dakota, on November 12, 2026. The program helps cattle producers learn safe and effective ways to raise and handle cattle while improving animal care and beef quality.

The training takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. Central Daylight Time at the SDSU Extension Lake County Office. The event is open to anyone involved in raising or handling cattle, including beef and dairy farmers, ranchers, and livestock workers.

Registration is free and includes training materials. Interested participants can register through the SDSU Extension Events page by searching for “beef.”

Beef Quality Assurance is a nationwide program that encourages cattle producers to improve their practices through science-based guidance. It focuses on animal well-being, beef quality, and food safety.

The program provides educational resources to help producers follow good animal care practices and use current research in their daily work. It also connects farmers and ranchers with updated information about cattle management, handling methods, and livestock health.

“We know cattle producers care about raising safe, high-quality animals, and Beef Quality Assurance training is one way to help them achieve that,” Madison said. “We are proud to continue providing this program to producers in South Dakota.”

Participants who complete the training can earn Beef Quality Assurance certification. The certification remains valid for three years.

BQA certification helps producers improve their cattle operations in several ways. It supports responsible animal care, helps maintain consumer trust in beef products, and encourages better herd management. These practices can also improve farm profits and protect the reputation of the beef industry.

Following BQA guidelines can help producers meet consumer expectations for safe, high-quality beef. Better cattle care and handling practices can also support the quality of animals sold for beef production.

BQA training is part of a broader effort to strengthen livestock production across South Dakota. By sharing current research and practical knowledge, SDSU Extension helps producers make informed decisions about animal care and farm management.

The training gives participants an opportunity to improve their skills, learn about industry standards, and connect their daily practices with the wider goals of beef quality and safety.

Cattle producers and other interested individuals can attend the Madison session to gain useful knowledge and complete their certification.
