South Dakota 4-H Opens New Volunteer Opportunities

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota 4-H, a program of South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension, is inviting volunteers, industry supporters, and current 4-H members to join its statewide project committees. These committees help plan and support educational activities that give young people opportunities to learn new skills, explore their interests, and take part in community programs.

The initiative aims to bring together people with different backgrounds, experiences, and areas of knowledge to strengthen 4-H programs across South Dakota.

South Dakota 4-H offers a wide range of projects and activities for young people. Statewide committees support several areas, including traditional animal projects, youth-in-action events, shooting sports, and outdoor education.

Committee members can share their knowledge, help improve educational programs, and work with others who have similar interests. These roles also offer opportunities to build professional skills, develop relationships, and become more involved in local communities.

Former 4-H members who want to reconnect with the program are also encouraged to apply. People with experience or a strong interest in a particular project area can contribute their skills to help young people learn and grow.

People interested in joining a statewide project committee must complete a short questionnaire. The application asks about their volunteer or 4-H membership status, preferred committees, previous experience, desired term length, and knowledge related to specific project areas.

To apply, visit the SDSU Extension Events page at https://extension.sdstate.edu/events and search for “committee.”

The application deadline is November 1, 2026. Applicants will receive further information after their applications have been reviewed.

South Dakota 4-H wants its committees to represent the wide range of experiences, backgrounds, geographic regions, and project interests found across the state. The program also aims to include youth voices in decisions that help shape its future.

"Our statewide project committees remain an essential part of providing high-quality educational opportunities for youth across the state. We look forward to continuing this work together with our volunteers and partners across the state," said Rosie Nold, assistant dean and Director of Global Agricultural Leadership and SDSU Extension 4-H Program Director.

Statewide project committees play an important role in helping South Dakota 4-H provide meaningful learning experiences. By bringing together young people, volunteers, and industry partners, the program can continue developing activities that meet the needs and interests of its members.
