SDSU workshop empowers women in grazing management

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension is set to host the Women on the Range Grazing Workshop, scheduled for July 8-10, 2024. The workshop will take place daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT at the Wedge Tent Ranch near Faith. The registration fee is $175 per person, covering all materials, meals across the days, and evening activities.

This event is designed specifically for women, focusing on range ecology and the symbiotic relationship between plants and livestock. Participants will delve into various grazing principles and strategies aimed at optimizing grazing efficiency on their farms.

Krista Ehlert, Assistant Professor and SDSU Extension Range Specialist, expressed enthusiasm about the event. "I’m excited to offer a Women on the Range event that brings women together to learn and understand how to implement grazing on their operations in a way that suits their system,” Ehlert stated.

Launched in 2021, the Women on the Range initiative aims to educate and empower women in South Dakota on range management, positioning them as leaders within the agricultural sector. Each workshop is crafted to provide hands-on, interactive education and mentoring in a supportive environment designed by women for women.

Those interested in participating should register early as spots are limited. Registration can be completed through the SDSU Extension Events page by searching for "grazing."
