Seeking South Dakota's top ag educator

Seeking South Dakota's top ag educator

By Scout Nelson

Investing time and energy, agricultural educators shape the future of farming in communities. In recognition of this, Nationwide and the SD FFA Foundation are calling for nominations for South Dakota's foremost agricultural teachers for the 2023-2024 Golden Owl Award. The goal is to honor the best educator as Ag Educator of the Year.

In a recent ceremony, 64 outstanding educators earned the title of 2022-2023 Golden Owl Award finalists, with nine emerging as state winners. Each finalist got $500 for their programs, while state winners pocketed an extra $3,000 and the coveted Golden Owl trophy.

Brad Liggett, Nationwide's president of Agribusiness, speaks highly of this initiative. He points out that it's a gesture of gratitude for teachers who passionately shape America's future agricultural leaders. Thus, encouraging everyone - students, parents, and peers - to nominate deserving candidates.

You can participate by nominating a worthy South Dakota agricultural teacher before December 31, 2023.

Post-nomination, a committee will shortlist eight finalists, each receiving $500 and a special plaque. One of these will claim the grand title, along with the Golden Owl trophy and an additional $3,000 for educational pursuits.

Supporting the larger agricultural community, Nationwide has committed a $5,000 donation to each participating state's FFA, including South Dakota. This will empower students, teachers, and advisors to reach new heights in their agricultural journey.
