SkillsX by 4-H - A gateway to youth leadership development

By Scout Nelson

This June, the SDSU campus in Brookings will be buzzing with aspiring young leaders as it hosts the SkillsX by 4-H conference, previously known as the Teen Leadership Conference.

Scheduled for June 3-7, 2024, this event provides South Dakota youth, ages 13 to 18, with a platform to develop essential leadership and life skills.

Registration for the event is now open with a fee of $350 before April 20, and $375 from April 21 to May 3. Interested participants can register by visiting the SDSU Extension Events page and searching for “SkillsX”.

Those in financial need can avail a $40 discount sponsored by Tractor Supply Company by using the code “TSC”.

This year’s conference theme, The Ticket to Your Future, incorporates popular movie references, adding a unique twist to the educational experience.

Attendees will engage in workshops focused on science, agricultural leadership, and health/wellness, alongside enjoyable activities like tours and community service.

“Some of my favorite memories from this conference would be the barn dance where I first learned how to jitterbug and line dance and the talent show in 2019,” recalled Kate Hamilton, the President of the State 4-H Ambassador SkillsX Committee.

Carley Crist, the Vice President, highlighted the lasting friendships and life skills built at the conference. “You make some of the best memories and make friends that will last a lifetime,” she said.

Motivational speaker and basketball trick artist Jesse LeBeau will be this year’s keynote workshop presenter. His involvement underscores the conference’s commitment to fostering an inspiring and supportive environment.

Hilary Risner, SDSU Extension Program Manager and Regional Youth Educator, encouraged participation: “Grab a ticket and join us at SkillsX by 4-H. This conference creates a fun and inclusive environment for teens to develop to their fullest potential.”
