Soil health and Profit Conference for Farmers

Soil health and Profit Conference for Farmers

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University Extension will host its annual "Managing Soil: Maximizing Profit" conference on Dec. 10, 2024, in Wagner. Aimed at crop producers and industry professionals, this event provides practical insights into soil management and sustainable farming practices.

The conference will take place from 9:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. CST at the Wagner Theater banquet room. Tickets are $25 for non-Southeast Research Farm members, and free for members, with lunch included.

Anthony Bly, SDSU Extension Soils Field Specialist, highlights the importance of soil health for successful crop and forage production. “Good crops and forages happen because of good soil,” Bly said. The conference is designed to offer actionable information for farmers and professionals working in crop production, forages, and livestock

The event will feature presentations from experts such as Bly and Pete Sexton, SDSU Extension Sustainable Cropping Systems Specialist, who will share their experiences with no-till farming. Sexton notes that the conference will focus on improving soil health and integrating grazing cattle into crop systems for profitability.

Additional speakers include experts discussing composting for crops and building soil health through integrated livestock and crop production. Kevin Sedivec, a professor from North Dakota State University, will speak about managing cover crops for grazing.

The conference will conclude with a panel discussion, and the Southeast Research Farm will hold its annual meeting and elections. Continuing education credits for certified crop advisors will also be available to attendees.
